The recent volume edited by Lisa Shaw and Stephanie
Dennison, Latin American Cinema: Essays on Modernity, Gender
and National Identity (2005) is a refreshing work on the study of
Latin American cinematography, since it departs from the conventional canon associated with Latin American film. Although some chapters deal with the usual countries— Mexico, Argentina and Brazil—and with films from the 1960s, 1970s,
and 1980s, there is a conscious effort to include smaller markets and producing countries such as Peru and Uruguay.
