Abstract

Invoking reflections on peripheral realisms (Esty and Lye), which can totalize and periodize capitalism, I address One Hundred Years of Solitude, not as a model of magical realism in its conventional meaning, where magic has almost total control over the world, but as a literary form that may express a complex social totality, corresponding to the socioeconomic changes produced in the Colombian society since its integration to the capitalist mode of production. Through that totality, depicted in the Buendía family’s odyssey and its relationship with magic, throughout all its generations, the novel describes the complex transition of Macondo as a small region isolated from the world towards an international trade route, where there will be tensions between an imperialist sector and an incipient national bourgeoisie that does not abandon its landowner’s roots.
