Abstract

This article examines eroticism in the book of poems Residencia en la tierra by Pablo Neruda, specifically the “Primera Residencia”, published in 1933. Distancing itself from interpretations based on the supposed alienation of the poet during his diplomatic posts in Myanmar and Sri Lanka, this analysis focuses on how Neruda constructs a cyclical eroticism where specific stages are repeated throughout his relationships with different women, absent beloveds and present lovers. The approach to eroticism draws on the theories of Georges Bataille and René Girard and demonstrates how this version of erotic discourse is built upon transgression and displacement. With this type of eroticism, Neruda instrumentalizes contact with the other as a means of self-discovery. The erotic relationship becomes the production of masks for his poetic persona through the adoption of different roles in his sexual and intimate relationships with women in the text.
