Abstract

Prostitution is perhaps one of the issues that most divide feminists. In this essay, this tension will be examined based on the incorporation, mainly, of the reflection of Latin American sex workers who defend their human and labor rights. An important part of the criticism has assumed an authoritarian voice on the issue of prostitution and has disregarded the narratives of organized prostitutes. The stories gathered in this essay reject the idea of the sex worker as a permanent victim of patriarchy and social circumstances, which is the main idea defended by feminists who defend the elimination of sex work. The next aspect that will be addressed in this essay refers to the dialogue between the prostitute movement and the segment of feminist criticism that supports the demands of sex workers. Although in general aspects it is a relationship built on a more supportive basis, there are specific points of conflict. Based on the ideas of postcolonial theorists who emphasize the importance of autobiographical narratives to promote the visibility of the marginalized subject, and from Ochy Curiel's reflections on decolonial feminism, it will be argued that, by imposing themselves on the demands of organized sex workers, the so called “traditional criticism” imposes a hegemonic or colonial force on the discourse of prostitution. From this perspective, it will be argued that the theoretical (de)construction of sex work must take place on intersectional bases, and from a constant (re)negotiation between the demands of organized prostitutes, academics and society in general.
