Abstract

Martin Nesvig has made an important new contribution to our knowledge of the Catholic Church in New Spain with this high quality anthology. The emphasis of its ten substantial articles rests on people of various kinds and conditions and nature and their encounters with the institution and its belief system, with their lived faiths and local religion.

Robert Haskett es Profesor de Historia Latinoamericana en la Universidad de Oregon y especialista en la historia colonial e indígena de México. Obtuvo su doctorado en la Universidad de California, Los Angeles. Es autor de dos libros,
Indigenous Rulers: An Ethnohistory of Indian Town Government in Colonial Cuernavaca (University of New Mexico Press, 1991) y Visions of Paradise. Primordial Titles and Mesoamerican History in Cuernavaca (University of Oklahoma Press, 2004) y co-editor, con Susan Schroeder y Stephanie Wood, del libro Indian Women of Early Mexico (University of Oklahoma Press, 1999). También se desempeña como co-editor de la sección de Etnohistoria Mesoamericana del Handbook of Latin American Studies que publica la
Biblioteca del Congreso.
