Abstract

In this article, we will address two main elements of Libertad Demitrópulos's Río de las congojas: the Paraná and rhythm. We propose that at least two different views of the river converge in the novel: that of the mestizo Blas de Acuña and that of the criolla María Muratore. The dissimilarity between these lies in the fact that they are determined by the ways in which the protagonists interpret their environment in terms of gender, by their particular experiences as men and women. The Paraná thus becomes a mirror of their identities and a space that allows them to express their unique vision of the world. Within these perspectives, the one that is most interesting in this analysis is the way in which the protagonists understand motherhood and describe it through fluevial images. Finally, we seek to show that the portrait of the Paraná of both characters, which reveals their subjectivities, is not only constructed in the work through the vocabulary they use, but also through the particular rhythm of the poetic prose of each of them.
