Abstract

Argentina, 1985, released in 2022, is a film that portrays the judicial process which convicted the military leaders responsible for the civic-military dictatorship that took place in the country between 1976 and 1983 of homicide, unlawful deprivation of liberty, and the use of torture. The conviction was a historic milestone both nationally and internationally, positioning Argentina as a pioneer in the defense of human rights. The film was a success both domestically and abroad, receiving awards at the Venice and San Sebastián film festivals, winning the Golden Globe for Best International Feature Film, and subsequently earning an Academy Award nomination.

This level of recognition for an Argentine film is unusual. Therefore we ask, and attempt to answer, how Argentina, 1985 managed to establish itself as a cultural product and become an international cinematic phenomenon in a market that is increasingly stifling for national productions. The well-documented trajectory of the film allowed us to observe the promotional and distribution strategies that, in our view, led to its success, as well as the specific features of the public policy framework aimed at constructing historical memory, which significantly influenced its success.
