Abstract

The present article analyzes the heterotopic alliance established with the animal in the novel Mi novia preferida fue un bulldog francés (2017), by the Cuban writer Legna Rodríguez Iglesias (1984). It explores how the text seeks to free itself from the centrality of the  human in order to elude normative power’s grasp on the body. To achieve this, the novel relies on various assemblages: the pact with the animal, illness as a form of non-belonging or viral propagation of microorganisms, and the novel’s own act of writing, employed as a means to decenter and dismember the unity of the narrative body. Mi novia preferida fue un bulldog francés embraces the notion of “becoming-with” (Haraway 2019), joining with multitudes to render itself indistinguishable and to challenge the exceptionalism of personal logic. The animal draws the subject toward plurality and enables the displacement of the positions assigned to a body (Quintana 2020), redeeming it from its form. It is a novel that seeks to be no one as a mode of emancipation.
