Abstract

As Arnold J. Bauer recognizes, the fate of the mysterious “Codex Cardona” is a story with an unknown beginning and an unknown end. His book takes on a labyrinthine quest in search of the manuscript’s provenance, a heroic effort that took him across the United States, to Mexico, and to Europe, all without quite leading us out of the maze. But Bauer’s account of the quest is seductive and the reader is left with a yearning to know more. This essay reviews Arnold J. Bauer's The Search for the Codex Cardona: On the Trail of a Sixteenth-Century Mexican Treasure (Durham: Duke UP, 2009).
