Abstract

This book uses literary analysis of Mexican texts from the 1600s and 1700s to suggest that two separate communities existed within female convents in New Spain. Kirk defines the two communities as “the bonds, alliances, friendships, and micro- and macro-communities of different kinds” created by nuns within thec onvent, “that stood in opposition to the controlled community that he Church authorities attempted to impose from outside”.
