Abstract

The author’s survey of the solidarity networks encompasses avariety of local NGOs (many based in San Cristóbal de Las Casas); international groups doing direct solidarity involving developmentaid, information, human rights observation, and fair trade; groups“practicing Zapatismo at home” with linked protests against neoliberalism on other fronts; and groups engaged in institutional politics to pressure governments (U.S., European, Mexican) and international organizations.

Richard Stahler-Sholk es Profesor Asociado de Ciencia Política en Eastern Michigan University. Actualmente se desempeña como editor asociado de la revista Latin American Perspectives, y ha co-editado un número especial sobre movimientos sociales que aparecerá en marzo del 2007. Ha participado anualmente como observador voluntario de los derechos humanos en Chiapas desde 1994, y pasó allí el año académico 2005-06 haciendo investigaciones sobre el movimiento autónomo zapatista.
